01

Purpose of the Research

This survey is part of ongoing research conducted by The Atkinson Institute, a research organization focused on impostor phenomenon, identity, and self-worth. Our current study — Rank, Relocation, and Resilience: Understanding Military Spouse Identity — examines how frequent relocation, rank culture, career disruption, and community belonging shape self-perception and impostor phenomenon responses in military spouse populations.

The research is led by Simone S. Atkinson, Founder and Principal Investigator. Findings will be used to develop peer-informed publications, original conceptual frameworks, and community-facing programs designed specifically for military spouses and transitional professionals.

02

What Information We Collect

When you complete this survey, we collect the following:

Your survey responses, including multiple-choice, rating scale, and checkbox items
Demographic information you choose to share — including age range, gender identity, branch of service, partner's rank, geographic location, years as a military spouse, and employment status
Barrier and experience data related to employment, relocation, and community belonging
A timestamp indicating when the response was submitted (for data management purposes only)

We do not collect your name or email address unless you voluntarily provide them. Name and email are optional fields offered only to facilitate delivery of your personal insight report and follow-up resources. Providing them does not affect your eligibility to participate or the anonymity of your survey responses.

We do not use tracking pixels, advertising cookies, or third-party behavioral analytics in connection with this survey.

03

How Your Data Will Be Used

Responses are used for research purposes only — to identify patterns in impostorism, identity, belonging, and resilience across military spouse populations
Data is analyzed in aggregate. You will never be personally identified in any publication, presentation, or report
Findings may be published in peer-informed articles on the Atkinson Institute website, shared at professional conferences, or cited in academic or policy contexts
Anonymized data may be shared with academic collaborators or partner organizations for research purposes, always under data use agreements that prohibit individual identification
Your responses will not be sold, licensed, or used for commercial purposes of any kind
04

Confidentiality & Data Security

The Atkinson Institute takes the confidentiality of participant data seriously. The following measures are in place:

Responses are stored on secure, access-controlled systems. Only the research team has access to raw response data
Any published results are presented in aggregate form. No individual response will be quoted, excerpted, or attributed without separate written consent
Optional contact information (name and email) is stored separately from survey response data and is used only to send your personal insight report
Data is retained for the duration of the research project and for a reasonable period thereafter for verification and replication purposes, consistent with standard research practice

To request removal of your contact information, email admin@theatkinsoninstitute.org. Note that because survey responses are de-identified at submission, individual response records cannot be located or deleted after the fact.

05

Risks & Benefits

Participation in this study carries minimal risk. The following overview is provided in the interest of full transparency.

Potential Risks

Some survey items address self-doubt, career disruption, and community belonging, which may bring up uncomfortable thoughts or feelings. You may skip any question you do not wish to answer. There are no penalties for skipping or for withdrawing from the survey entirely.

Potential Benefits

There is no direct compensation for participation. However, participants who provide an email address receive a personal insight report, tools for strengthening identity clarity, access to workshop materials, and early access to published study findings. All participants contribute to research that may improve resources, programming, and advocacy for military spouse communities.

06

Voluntary Participation

Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You may:

Choose not to participate without any consequence
Skip any individual question without affecting your ability to submit the survey
Exit the survey at any time before submitting — if you close the browser before clicking Submit, no response is recorded

Once you click Submit, your de-identified response is recorded. Because submitted responses are immediately anonymized, they cannot be traced back to you or individually withdrawn. If you have concerns after submitting, contact admin@theatkinsoninstitute.org and we will do our best to assist.

08
